For The Utah Contractor Do You Qualify? Rules for licensure require an applicant to meet certain experience requirements. A minimum of four years full-time, related experience, two years of which shall be in a supervisory or managerial position for applicants of contractor classifications of: E100 - General Engineering
A minimum of four years full-time related experience for applicants of contractor classifications: S280 - General Roofing
A minimum of two years full-time related experience for applicants of all other contractor classifications not listed above. Experience must be verifiable by a Utah contractor in the same trade you are applying for, in order for the experience to count. The verified experience MUST be as a W2 employee (a 1099 does not qualify) of that licensed contractor. The experience must all add up within the last 10 years. If you have worked for several contractors as an employee, your work experience must total the full-time experience explained above. If a contractor that you need to verify your experience has gone out of business, will not sign the verification, etc., you may submit W2's and tax returns for the years covering the experience and the following: For supervisory experience, provide at least two letters from building officials. For non-supervisory experience, provide at least two letters from building officials and/or suppliers. Letters must be on building official's or the supplier's letterhead, be dated and signed, and state how long the building official or supplier has known you to be an employee of the licensed contractor and what your specific responsibilities are/were during that period of time. What if You Have Bad Credit or Past Law Problems? This doesn't necessarily disqualify you. We take each individual circumstance and weigh it to see if it will get in your way of getting your license. For example, if you have a bankruptcy, proof of the discharge is all that's needed. This should not get in your way. However, if you have past due child support, or a lien or collection account that does not have written payment arrangements made on them, this will get in your way. You need to show that you have financial responsibility in all areas of your life. All you would need to do in this case is get written payment arrangements made, then you can proceed with the licensure process. When it comes to a criminal record or problems with the law, all issues should have a resolution in writing and a statement that the legal problem will never happen again.
